English is my specialist subject, and I teach it in many forms. If you are looking for English as a foreign language, please look at my EFL page. Should you want support with English in a way that is not listed on this website, please get in touch directly, as I am sure I will be able to support you.
English Literature
I teach English Literature up to an undergraduate level. I know all the major exam boards for A Level and GCSE, as well as the curriculums for the IB, IGSCE, Pre-U, SATs, and AP level. I have taught all the major set texts, as well as some of the more niche ones too.
I love teaching across forms and genres, and am always guided by the student’s individual strengths and weaknesses.
Having worked as a theatre director, my particular passion is for Shakespeare and modern drama – which are often the two areas students struggle with the most. I also love teaching poetry, particularly due to my background in linguistics, so I thoroughly enjoy working with students to unpick the technical side of poetry – something that is often ignored or deemed to hard too teach.
My students go into their English Literature exams feeling confident in their understanding of their set texts, able to analyse a piece of unseen text, and ready to plan essays under time constraints.
Recent students have achieved A*s at GCSE and A Level, including some jumping more than 4 grades from their original predictions.
English Language
I also teach English Language to an undergraduate level, and am familiar with all the major exam boards. I am also experienced in the ACT examinations and SATs for students either currently based in the US or looking to move into higher education there.
Literacy
Literacy is important at any age, and whether it is working on phonics, improving fluency, or supporting a student with dyslexia improve their reading – this is an area in which I have worked extensively.
